Continues - Chapter Two
This was supposed to be the second dev log for Continues, but since I didn't have time to create one, here's a quick recap of both releases.
So, first of all, what is Continues.
Genre-wise, Continues is a first-person puzzle speedrun platformer.
But for me it's my first project where I want to work longer than just one jam period. Actually there can be up to 12 jams combined in this project as I want to combine all themes from the https://itch.io/jam/gdfgs-monthly-game-jam-12 in this project.
This means that for every jam there is a new chapter in the project.
Starting with chapters one and two, at most 80 hours of work has currently been put into continues. And so far I've really liked it.
Chapter One:
The theme was "Leaving something behind".
So I had to come up with a game idea that could be expanded. And so Continues was born. I chose a first person platformer (which ended up becoming a speedrun puzzle platformer) and added abilities. To fulfill the theme, the player could only carry one ability at a time. Besides laying a good foundation, I spent a lot of time on level design and added 10 levels in total.
Chapter Two:
This time the theme was “Risk vs Reward”.
The first thing that came to my mind was to add some kind of health system and add levels with shortcuts that are more risky but faster. In the end it was OK. I have a total of 6 new levels, maybe 3 of which do pretty well with this idea. I added some more mechanics and models, esp. for more variety in level design, but in the end it again took the most time to create the levels.
One addition I added early on is the hidden "Damage Boost" feature, which allows the player to jump higher right after taking damage. This might not be that interesting for a normal playthrough, but it could be crucial for speedrunning.
Except for some lush ambient sounds, there are currently no real music tracks. I'm not sure if that would improve the game or if that would fit at all. Also i'd like to add some more sound effects. But that for the next month, maybe.
So far I'm very proud of the progress and really hope that the next theme is somewhat appropriate to continue on 'Continues'.
Until then,
Have a good time!
